Italian Chopped Sandwich
About this recipe
The viral Italian chopped sandwich that took social media by storm in 2024 — a hoagie roll piled high with chopped salami, ham, pepperoncini, provolone, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and red onion, all tossed together with a zesty Italian dressing right on the cutting board. Every bite is packed with bold, briny, savory flavor.
Instructions
- 1
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the extra-virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, oregano, garlic powder, red pepper flakes (if using), fine sea salt, and black pepper until emulsified. Taste and adjust seasoning. Set aside.
- 2
On a large cutting board, pile the chopped genoa salami, deli ham, provolone cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, diced roma tomatoes, red onion, and pepperoncini peppers together in one big mound. Using a large knife, chop everything together, rocking the blade back and forth until the mixture is uniformly chopped into small, bite-sized pieces — this is the signature viral technique.
- 3
Drizzle the prepared dressing over the chopped filling right on the cutting board. Use the knife or a spatula to toss and fold everything together until evenly coated. Taste and add more fine sea salt, black pepper, or red wine vinegar as needed.
- 4
Lightly toast the hoagie rolls in a toaster oven or under the broiler for 2–3 minutes until just golden. Slice each roll open and pile a generous heap of the dressed chopped filling into each one. Press down gently, slice in half, and serve immediately.
