Choose the variation you want to cook

Each variation is built around a specific method and equipment. Pick one first, then the instructions, ingredients, and actions below update to that exact approach.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Prep Tortillas for the Microwave

Decide how many tortillas you need — no more than a dozen at a time for even results. Dampen a paper towel or clean kitchen towel with a few tablespoons of water and use it to wrap the tortillas. The moisture creates steam that softens and keeps them pliable. Plastic wrap works as an alternative. Use a microwave-safe plate or casserole dish for larger batches. No oil or seasoning needed.

  2. 2

    Microwave Tortillas

Wrap tortillas in a damp paper towel, stacking them neatly. For a small batch, microwave on full power for 20 to 30 seconds. For up to a dozen, microwave on full power for 1 minute, flip the whole package, then microwave for another 30 seconds. For a gentler approach with a large batch, microwave at 50 percent power for about 4 minutes. Timing varies by wattage and quantity, so start low and add a few seconds if needed. They are ready when warm and soft through the wrapping and bend without cracking. Let the package rest 1 to 2 minutes before unwrapping so the steam finishes the job.

  3. 3

    Doneness and Serving Tips

Warm tortillas should be soft and flexible enough to fold without cracking. If they crack, add a few more seconds or re-dampen the paper towel. Do not over-microwave or they turn tough and rubbery. Serve right away and keep unused tortillas wrapped in the damp towel. This method warms and softens only — no color or char.
