Choose the variation you want to cook

Each variation is built around a specific method and equipment. Pick one first, then the instructions, ingredients, and actions below update to that exact approach.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Prep Peas for the Microwave

Fresh or frozen peas both work — no thawing needed for frozen. Shell fresh peas just before cooking. For sugar snap peas, snip stem ends and pull away any tough strings. Measure your peas and grab a microwave-safe dish with a lid, microwave-safe plate, or damp paper towels to cover. Add a tablespoon of water to the dish to generate steam and prevent drying out.

  2. 2

    How to Microwave Peas

Place peas in a microwave-safe dish in a single layer. Add 1 tbsp water, then cover loosely with a lid, plate, or damp paper towels — traps steam without building pressure. Microwave on high: - Frozen green peas: 2–3 min, stir, then 30-sec to 1-min intervals until done (3–5 min total) - Fresh shelled sweet peas: 4–6 min total, stirring partway - Sugar snap peas: 6–7 min total; check for crisp-tender Stir at least once during cooking. Start at the low end of the time range and add time in short bursts. Done when heated through, bright in color, and tender to the bite. Taste carefully — they'll be very hot.

  3. 3

    Drain, Season, and Serve

Remove peas carefully — dish and steam will be very hot. Drain off excess water using a fine mesh strainer (peas slip through a standard colander). Serve immediately; they lose color and texture fast. Season with salt and pepper or a small pat of butter. Don't overcook — they turn mushy quickly, so trust tenderness over the timer.
