Use a 1:1 ratio of couscous to liquid. About 1 cup each works for a single serving. Optionally stir in a drizzle of olive oil or a pat of butter before microwaving to keep grains separate. Use a microwave-safe bowl large enough to handle double the starting volume. Have a fork ready for fluffing.

Microwave Couscous: Quick Steps
- Pour measured liquid into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high 2 to 3 minutes until fully boiling with active bubbling.
- Remove from microwave. Stir in couscous and any oil or butter until all grains are moistened.
- Cover tightly with a plate, lid, or plastic wrap. Let sit off heat for 5 minutes. The trapped steam cooks the couscous, not more microwave time.
- Alternatively, combine couscous and liquid in a microwave-safe bowl, cover loosely, and microwave on high 2 to 3 minutes until liquid is absorbed and grains are tender. Total microwave time across either method is 3 to 6 minutes.
- To reheat already-cooked couscous, cover and microwave in 1-minute bursts until heated through.

Fluff, Check, and Serve
Uncover the bowl and fluff the couscous with a fork using a lifting and separating motion — do not stir. If grains still look wet or clump heavily, leave uncovered for 1 to 2 more minutes to let steam escape. Taste and adjust salt. Serve immediately, or stir in a little butter or olive oil to keep grains loose. Do not press or compact the couscous.
