  • 350°F

Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly cooking spray or 6 tbsp mantequilla sin sal a 9×13-inch baking dish (or a 2.5–3 quart baking dish) and set aside.

Uses

  • Oven
  • Cooking Spray
  • Baking Dish

Peel, core, and slice the 3 lb manzanas peladas into uniform 1/4-inch thick slices. Consistent thickness ensures even cooking — too thick and they'll be crunchy, too thin and they'll turn to mush.

In a large mixing bowl, toss the 3 lb manzanas peladas slices with the 3 tbsp azúcar granulado, 1 tbsp jugo de limón, 1 tsp canela, ¼ tsp nuez moscada, and 1 tbsp almidón de maíz until evenly coated. The 1 tbsp almidón de maíz will thicken the juices as they bake, preventing a watery filling.

Uses

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Lemon Juice

Spread the 3 lb manzanas peladas mixture in an even layer in the prepared baking dish. Set aside while you make the topping.

Uses

  • Baking Dish

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the 1 cup avena laminada antigua, ¾ cup harina de trigo, ¾ cup azúcar moreno claro compactado, 1 tsp canela, and ¼ tsp sal fina until combined.

Uses

  • Mixing Bowl

Add the cold 6 tbsp mantequilla sin sal cubes to the oat mixture. Using your fingertips, work the 6 tbsp mantequilla sin sal into the dry ingredients by pressing and rubbing until the mixture resembles coarse, clumpy crumbs with some pea-sized pieces of mantequilla sin sal remaining.

Uses

  • Rolled Oats

Scatter the topping evenly over the 3 lb manzanas peladas filling in the baking dish, covering the apples completely. Don't press it down — a loose topping bakes up crispier.

  • 350°F

Bake on the center rack at 350°F for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is deep golden brown and the 3 lb manzanas peladas filling is bubbling around the edges. If the topping browns too quickly, tent loosely with aluminum foil for the last 10 minutes.

Uses

  • Aluminum Foil
  • Light Brown Sugar
  • 10 min

Remove from the oven and let rest for at least 10 minutes before serving — the filling will thicken as it cools slightly. Serve warm, scooped into bowls, topped with helado de vainilla or crema batida.
